How to Downgrade from Windows 10 Enterprise to Windows 10 Pro - MajorGeeks.

Two years ago we started pushing out Windows 7 Enterprise on our machines. We are currently up to almost machines with Enterprise installed. I was asked to find to downgrade those machines back to 7 Pro for budget reasons. We have volume licensing for both, and Windows activation is handled through Group Policy. I have googled for the past couple days. Most have said it isn't possible, or gave me a sketchy 3rd party tool. I can get it to work by editing some registry keys and running an upgrade with a Pro disk..

Either this or do a fresh install of the OS. I tested the upgrade process and it works fine Doing this on machines doesn't sound fun. I believe that the Windows license is for that version of the software Enterprise only. I am not sure how doing this would save any money as the licensing is the same if you are using volume licensing.

Is the labor required to downgrade machines cheaper than keeping the EE licensing for the current version? Maybe just change the editions the next time you renew your VL contract with Microsoft?

CDW is a great resource for microsoft licensing. If you don't have a rep, get one. LMK if you need help here. I don't think there is an easy way either. But if you already messing with things, you might as well fresh install. You might want to ask them the reason they want to do this - maybe they misunderstand what they are asking you to do?

Is it just that they don't want to continue paying SA on Enterprise? You will have to do a fresh install. So the reverse will also be true. Guessing you want to use the Pro OEM licenses that came with the machine instead of your volume license? If you're downgrading to save costs, that is not where you're going to save costs. I think that's the point Rockn is making correct me if I'm wrong here. I am unsure if there is a MS supported method to downgrade to Professional from Enterprise, but I would be interested in hearing if there is aside from a full reinstall of the Professional version.

Thanks for the clarification Chris! Going forward you can deploy Windows 7 Pro clients, but I am not sure how having one or the other installed would save you money. Exercisus in Futilitus. Yeah I have no idea either honestly, all I know is that I was asked to do research on how it can be done. Thanks for all the help I now have plenty to report back to the top of the totem pole. Happy to help If you have perpetual use rights, you don't need to uninstall when SA lapses or isn't renewed.

You can continue to use Windows 7 Enterprise for the life of that device. If you don't have perpetual use rights you may have a subscription VL agreement and that case you would need to buy out perpetual use rights to the Enterprise version of Windows or downgrade to the original OEM license probably in your case Windows 7 Pro. Volume license agreements don't expire.

You buy the licenses and you done. Use them forever. So Rockn's point is this: Someone above you clearly doesn't understand what's actually involved here. They think that "downgrading" your installed OS will somehow "save money". It won't, for reasons already noted.
